Dr. DOU Lirong is the Director of National Oil & Gas Strategic Research Center, the Executive Director and President of Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration & Development(RIPED), CNPC and the Chief Geologist of CNODC,CNPC.He also holds the professional title of Principal Senior Engineer at CNPC.

DOU has been long engaged in research of petroleum geological theory and petroleum exploration practices. During his career in Africa over ten years, DOU has achieved a series of innovations in hydrocarbon accumulation theory & technology and exploration practices for superimposed basins in the Middle-West African Rift System, which have contributed to the discoveries of medium and large-sized oilfields in (South) Sudan, Chad, and other countries.

DOU has been awarded the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (one First Prize, and two Second Prizes), the China Invention Patent Silver Award, and the Ministerial Science and Technology Progress Award (one Grand Prize, and eight First Prizes). He has (co-)authored over 120 academic papers and 6 monographs. He is a winner of Top 100 National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations in China.

DOU has been honored with the Ho Leung Ho Lee Innovation Award, the Sun Yueqi Energy Award, and the Outstanding Engineer Award, and has been granted the government special allowance of the State Council. He received the 2016 AAPG Jules Braunstein Memorial Award. He is one of the initial members of the Geological Society of China and the Chinese Petroleum Society.
